As a professor I am bound to the grading scale. This hat receives an A+ for design, material selection and fabrication. This was the fourth hat I purchased in this style (baseball brim with neck flaps), and the first to provide all desired features: long enough brim for good face protection, long enough neck flaps to actually provide full coverage for the neck, and a neck strap to keep the hat on in higher winds.
The addition of the button that helps keep the neck flap tight to the neck by securing it under the chin is a great feature. It doubles to allow the flap to be secured above the hat, too, when it is not needed.
Finally, I found a cap with a neck covered that is long enough to reach my tshirt.
I have purchased other caps from Cileshop and other retailers to stop me from getting sunburn when I work outside. None of them seem to completely cover the back of my neck.
This cap provides about an inch overlap at the back of my neck.
The only drawback is that the cap is a little small for my head. It does come with an adjustable chinstrap but any movement of my head causes the chinstrap to loosen and then the brim starts to move around.
I can trade a little bit of comfort if I can avoid the sunburn while working outside.
I used this for a week in the tough sun of Cuba fishing. I thought it would be too cumbersome but it worked out well. I had a neck gaitor but the veil actually was my preferred protection because the nose has a wire that forms exactly to your nose. My neck gaitor left an area right underneath my sunglass arms unprotected but the veil comes up higher. The only downside was that under wind the veil billows up into your face. You can button the two flaps together to prevent that, but then you've got 3 layers of clothing so I switched to neck gaitor for that. You can also "flip" the veil underneath the neck flap so I never needed to remove it. I was also able to wear my noise cancelling headset by unbuttoning the front buttons, donning headphones, then buttoning over top! The fabric is very light so it never felt too hot. The bill is just about the right length for fishing. The only other problem I had was that with so many "layers" of sunglasses, veil, side flaps, it was easy to get tangled. You have to come up with a system - for me it was sunglasses first, then hat, tuck veil under sunglasses. The remaining issue is that if it's windy you need the neck strap but it makes it difficult to remove your hat quickly. I wish that the neck strap were attached by velcro so you could just rip it off for a quick photo.
This is the perfect hat for people who work outdoors, I'm very pleasant with this purchase absolutely recommend
This sun hat is perfect. One of my criteria is crunchable into a backpack. You could probably crunch this into a cargo pant pocket. The neck piece comes perfectly around the sides covering the ears and side of the face. The skirt part is very lightweight. The hat is very light weight. I have a big head and it fits fine and doesn't look small at all. Pretty perfect. I got a light grey. I will probably get another one a little darker, but will keep them both. I have no need for the face shield but I'm keeping it around. I live in Arizona and you never know when it might come in handy. I've worn wide brimmed PF sun hats for years. But, they look a little frumpy and the brims are a PIA in the wind. This hat completely solves all of that. I highly recommend this hat.
